Custom Design Services Details & Policies

Timelines 

  • Design Timeline: The total timeline is based on the design process, stone search, customer's decision, etc. Madberet will have sketched designs & stones options ready 1-3 days after design appointments and reviews. 
  • Crafting Timeline: It takes 4-6 weeks to produce a custom design after the initial invoice is completed. Should you need a piece by a specific date that requires a rushed timeline, please communicate that with us. While we cannot guarantee a rushed timeline, we can do our best to accommodate & get the piece to you by the desired date. 
  • Multiple Designs: If your project involves multiple designs, please expect an extended timeline. 
  • Communication: We will maintain communications with you & we ask that you do the same so that we can best execute your project, be efficient in the process and meet the desired timeline. 

Design Process & Payments

  • Design & Diamond/Gemstone Selection: We will work with you via design consultations & ongoing communications to reach a final design sketch, design specifications & diamond/gemstone selections. 
  • Initiating Crafting: Upon your approval of the final design & diamond/gemstone selection, we will send you an invoice for the first 50% non-refundable deposit. Once that is complete, we will get your project started in our crafting process. Upon customer request, we can share photos & videos of the wax model before casting it in metal or setting the stones. This is the last opportunity to make design changes without incurring additional costs. 
  • Review & Final Payment: We will notify you when your design is complete. If you are local, we will send you a link to schedule a pickup time. The final 50% payment will be due upon your review in your appointment. If your piece requires shipping, we will send you photos & videos of the finished piece for your review. Upon your approval, we will send you the invoice for the final 50% payment. Customers are required to review the design & complete the final invoice within 1 week of being notified that it is finished. 
  • Payment Methods: We accept cash, credit card or banker's check. We do not offer financing or payment plans.
  • Resizing: We offer one complementary resizing service within 30 days of receiving a finished ring. Resizing beyond that time period will have a $50 resizing fee, plus any shipping costs if applicable. 
  • Custom Designs are Final Sale: Custom designs require significant time, craftsmanship, materials & care to create each one exactly to a customer's specifications. For these reasons, custom designs are final sale. We are committed to working with you to reach reasonable solutions & ensure that you are satisfied with your experience working with Madberet. 

Anomalous Situations

  • Extended Diamond/Gemstone Search: Madberet will source a selection of diamonds or gemstones that match your specified criteria & share them with you for your review. The stone(s) you select will be held for up to 5 days after your review. Following your initial stone review, should you be interested in reviewing more stones, there will be a $250 non-refundable deposit for an extended stone search. That deposit will be deducted from the first 50% payment after you have selected your stone. If for any reason you decide not to work with Madberet on this piece, that deposit can be placed toward another piece in our collection. 
  • Self-Sourced Stones: If, after reviewing stones with Madberet, you decide to purchase a loose stone from a third party and are still interested in working with Madberet on the setting, there is a $200 self-sourced stone fee. We are happy to have your business for the design stage of this process, however this process will exclude you from the benefits offered to our customers who work with us for end-to-end projects. The customer is also responsible for insuring the loose stone before we begin working on the setting. Finally, because the stone has not been purchased through Madberet's vetted network of partners, we recommend a third-party appraisal. The customer can self-source an appraisal or Madberet can have a third-party appraisal completed. This is a $95 service. 
  • CAD Before First Payment: If you are interested in seeing a realistic rendering of the design before placing the first 50% payment, creating the rendering will be $150 per design. The $150 fee for the design that you select will be deducted from the first 50% payment. This service is non-refundable.  
  • Design Modifications: In the event that you are not satisfied with the craftsmanship of the design or if we do not create it as we had specified, it is our responsibility to modify or remake the piece at no cost to you. Should you decide you are interested in a different design, we will work with you to revise it at a discounted setting price (includes a percentage discount AND purchasing price of scrap metal deducted from the setting price). 
  • Stone Exchanges or Buy-Backs: We will consider buying stones back at a discounted rate within 30 days of purchase. This will be assessed on a case-by-case basis & will be influenced by the stone market at the time. 

Pricing

  • Price Baselines: Earrings, bracelets & necklaces start at $500. Bands start at $800. Engagement ring settings start at $1400 (does not include stones). Prices are determined by multiple factors, including the amount of metal, type of metal, stone type/size/number, design complexity, craftsmanship required, etc. Every employee, partner & supplier is vetted & paid fairly for their high quality work. This is reflected in the cost of our designs & services. 
  • Price Breakdowns: We detail pricing into specific categories to provide you with a full understanding of the cost. 
  • Price Reflects Quality: Madberet creates custom, luxury quality fine jewelry that is meant to last decades and generations with responsible care. We do not cut corners. We do not create for the masses. Our prices reflect the quality of our pieces, as well as the level of service & care our customers receive. 
  • Negotiating Price: Please consider the information above before negotiating with us on your custom design. We keep our company and operations intentionally lean to offer fair pricing. Quoted prices are a representation of the high quality materials and craftsmanship that are required to make each piece of fine jewelry. Because of this, we have very limited flexibility on pricing. 

Designs

  • Design Advisory: We are open minded and have worked in many different styles of jewelry, but we need to have a general idea of your idea before we lay out a design. This can include pictures, sketches, or other jewelry that will serve as a starting point for your custom design. We may advise you against design aspects or overall design based on its viability.
  • Excluded Materials: Madberet creates luxury jewelry with precious materials. This includes precious metals; solid gold and platinum. It includes high-quality precious and semi-precious stones. We do not fabricate, work on, or repair: silver, gold plated, gold filled, base metal, stainless steel, tungsten, titanium, cobalt, brass, wood, or glass. We advice customer on which gemstones will be best for long-term wear. 
  • Design Guidelines: Customers can bring us inspiration from other sources to inform a custom design. We will advise on how to create a design in a way that is unique & will work best for the customer. We will not exactly copy another designer's work and we will not design something we deem structurally unsound.
  • Design Advisory: From the designer to the gem trader to the bench jeweler, there are many jewelry experts who are contributing to creating a beautiful & sound design that we hope you will love. We ask that customers remain open minded to our advisory as we make recommendations to create a design that is structurally sound.
  • Quote Adjustments: We provide transparent pricing & quotes throughout the design process. If we provide an initial quote, then the customer asks for changes that affect the materials or process for the design, the quoted price is expected to change as well. We always communicate how & why prices are adjusted. Prices are subject to changes in the industry market values. Quotes are guaranteed for up to 30 days after initial receipt. Should we quote a customer for a project, then the customer does not begin the project within a month, Madberet has the right to adjust the quote based on new market prices once the customer is ready to begin at a point in the future. 
  • Price Locked Upon First Payment: The price will be finalized upon paying the first 50% payment if it is complete within 30 days of receiving the quote. The customer should expect zero additional fees or adjustments from that point forward, regardless of changes in the market. 

Sourcing gemstones and diamonds with Madberet 

  • Diamond & Gemstone Supply Partners: We work with expert gem suppliers and gem cutters to offer you high quality stones that best meet your design and pricing requirements. We do not keep an inventory of gemstones. This allows us to conduct individual gemstone searches for your design and allows us to offer fair pricing as a result of reduced inventory costs. 
  • Diamond & Gemstone Education: We prioritize jewelry education as a part of our process. We will explain everything about gemstone grading and characteristics. We bring forward options and explain characteristics and tradeoffs between gems. We advise you on balancing both quality and value in your selection.  

Resetting your gemstones and diamonds

  • We will work with stones that you bring us, provided that they are not cracked or chipped and that they are the appropriate hardness for the type of piece you wish to have made.
  • We will not use your diamonds or gemstones if they are under 2mm and you wish to have them channel, bead or pave set. We use our own highly calibrated stones to ensure uniformity, longevity and to meet our standards of quality. 
  • If your diamonds or gemstones are being shipped to us, they need to be insured in the shipping process. This requires documentation of the quality and value (an appraisal or an accredited certificate is best). It is your responsibility to know (and prove) what you are sending us. We will advise you on how to secure documentation and shipping insurance. Once we receive your package we will verify its contents and contact you. Your items are insured against loss or theft while they are in our possession.
  • Even with the utmost care, there is a possibility that gemstones or diamonds can crack or break upon removal or setting. The customer assumes this risk by agreeing to work with us in this process. We recommend having your pieces insured before we work on them.
  • We use freshly alloyed, ethically sourced, mostly recycled gold and platinum for all of our designs. We will not re-use gold from existing pieces. The process of reusing gold is complicated, the results are inferior, and the savings are negligible. We do purchase customer's gold & discount the cost of the reset project based on the weight & value of your scrap metal. 
  • After your piece is finished, we recommend you secure jewelry insurance on your new piece. We will provide you with an appraisal if we provide your stones. If we used your stones, you can choose to purchase an appraisal for your piece.
